Seagate BarraCuda 24TB

Massive desktop storage combining 24TB of capacity, CMR recording, 7200 RPM operation and a large 512MB cache.

24TB 7200 RPM CMR 512MB Cache SATA 6 Gb/s 120 TB/Year

Overview

The Seagate BarraCuda 24TB ST24000DM001 takes the familiar desktop BarraCuda family into extremely high-capacity territory. It is designed for PCs and storage systems where keeping a very large amount of data locally matters more than SSD-class access times.

Unlike some lower-capacity BarraCuda models, this exact 24TB version uses Conventional Magnetic Recording (CMR), runs at 7200 RPM and includes 512MB of cache. Seagate rates its maximum sustained outer-diameter read performance at up to 190 MB/s.

Its enormous capacity makes it particularly interesting for large media collections, project archives, game libraries and bulk desktop storage, while an SSD remains the better choice for operating systems and latency-sensitive applications.

Exact-model note: This review covers the ST24000DM001 24TB. BarraCuda specifications vary significantly by capacity. Do not apply specifications from the 8TB, 6TB or other BarraCuda models to this drive.

24TB Capacity

Massive Local Storage

Twenty-four terabytes provides an enormous amount of internal capacity for users maintaining large local collections of files, games, media or project data.

Fewer Physical Drives

A single high-capacity drive can reduce the number of individual HDDs required to reach a large storage target, which can simplify cabling and drive-bay requirements.

Bulk Storage Role

Its strongest role is capacity-oriented storage rather than replacing the low latency and responsiveness of modern SSDs.

CMR & 7200 RPM Design

The ST24000DM001 uses conventional magnetic recording. CMR writes tracks independently rather than overlapping them as occurs with shingled magnetic recording.

Combined with its 7200 RPM spindle speed, this makes the 24TB model considerably different from some lower-capacity BarraCuda drives. For example, Seagate currently specifies the BarraCuda 8TB as a 5400 RPM SMR model, while the 24TB version reviewed here is a 7200 RPM CMR design.

BarraCuda is a broad product family rather than one uniform hardware platform. Capacity-specific specifications should always be checked before purchasing.

Performance Profile

Sequential Transfers

Seagate specifies up to 190 MB/s maximum sustained outer-diameter read performance, making the drive suitable for large sequential file transfers and bulk data storage.

Large Cache

The 512MB multisegmented cache is substantially larger than the cache used by several lower-capacity BarraCuda models.

Mechanical Latency

Despite its 7200 RPM design, random access remains limited by mechanical seek and rotational latency. SSDs remain dramatically faster for highly random workloads.

Workload & Reliability Considerations

Seagate specifies a workload rate limit of 120 TB per year and a power-on-hours rating of 2,400 hours per year for the 24TB BarraCuda. Those figures are important when deciding where this drive belongs.

This is a high-capacity desktop HDD, not an enterprise or always-on NAS drive. Users planning continuous multi-user operation or substantially heavier annual workloads should compare purpose-built IronWolf Pro, Exos or similar enterprise-class storage instead.

Seagate also specifies 600,000 load/unload cycles and backs the drive with a two-year limited warranty.

Power & Cooling

Typical Operating Power8.9 W
Average Idle Power6.7 W
Standby / Sleep1.2 W
Startup Current2.0 A
Operating Temperature10°C to 60°C

High-capacity 7200 RPM mechanical drives generate more heat and vibration than solid-state storage. A case with reasonable airflow around the drive cage is preferable, particularly when several high-capacity HDDs are installed together.

Best Uses

Media Libraries

Well suited to large photo, music and video collections where capacity is more important than extremely low access latency.

Project Archives

The enormous capacity makes it useful for completed projects, source material, installers and other large files that need to remain locally accessible.

Secondary PC Storage

Pairing the BarraCuda with an NVMe SSD provides fast primary storage while preserving a huge amount of lower-cost local capacity.

What It Is Not Designed For

Not SSD-Class Primary Storage

Applications, Windows and frequently accessed games generally benefit far more from the low latency of an SSD.

Not an Enterprise / 24×7 Drive

Its published workload and power-on-hour ratings place it in the desktop-storage category. Heavy NAS and enterprise environments should use drives designed specifically for those workloads.

Owner & Community Perspective

The appeal of high-capacity BarraCuda drives is straightforward: enormous local capacity in a familiar SATA desktop format. Users building large media libraries, archival systems and mixed SSD/HDD desktops can consolidate substantial amounts of data onto a single drive.

The main considerations are also typical of very large mechanical drives: audible operation, vibration, mechanical access latency and the consequences of placing a very large amount of data on one device. Independent backup remains important regardless of drive capacity.

Owner experiences are anecdotal and should not be treated as controlled reliability testing. Individual drive failures can occur with any HDD, making a separate backup strategy essential for important data.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Enormous 24TB capacity
  • CMR recording technology
  • 7200 RPM spindle speed
  • Large 512MB cache
  • Standard SATA 6 Gb/s interface
  • Up to 190 MB/s rated sustained OD read
  • 120 TB/year workload rating
  • Useful for very large desktop storage collections

Limitations

  • Mechanical latency is far behind SSD storage
  • Two-year limited warranty is shorter than many premium HDDs
  • Not designed for enterprise-class 24×7 workloads
  • Produces mechanical noise and vibration
  • Large single-drive capacity increases the importance of backup
  • Requires a full-size 3.5-inch drive bay

Works Best With

NVMe Primary Drive

Use a fast NVMe SSD for Windows, software and active workloads, leaving the BarraCuda to handle high-capacity storage.

Full-Size Desktop Cases

Systems with proper 3.5-inch bays, SATA connections and airflow are the natural environment for this drive.

Independent Backup

Important data should also exist on another physical device or backup system. High capacity does not replace redundancy.

Rockin Box Tech Summary

The Seagate BarraCuda 24TB ST24000DM001 is an unusually large consumer desktop hard drive that combines 24TB of capacity with CMR recording, 7200 RPM operation and a 512MB cache.

Its strongest role is not replacing an SSD. Instead, it provides massive local capacity for users whose media libraries, project archives, games and other files have grown beyond what smaller drives can conveniently accommodate.

The 120 TB/year workload rating, 2,400-hour annual power-on rating and two-year warranty also define its intended role. It belongs in desktop and bulk-storage environments rather than being treated as an enterprise or continuous-duty NAS drive.

In a modern performance PC, pairing a fast NVMe SSD with a high-capacity BarraCuda can provide a practical balance between solid-state responsiveness and enormous mechanical storage capacity.
